Gastroscopy, is the passage of a small flexible fibrescope through the mouth and down into the stomach. The fibrescope is lighted and allows your doctor to inspect the lining of your oesophagus (the tube which connects your mouth to your stomach), the lining of your stomach, and the duodenum (the first part or your small bowel). This enables your doctor to identify, photograph and biopsy (take a small amount of tissue) any unusual tissue seen in these areas.
It is essential that your stomach be empty for gastroscopy. You must not eat or drink anything for at least six (6) hours before your appointment. Please check with us on the day prior to your appointment regarding your usual medications.
